A214 (The Reverend Canon Dr. Harold Lewis)

House of Bishops Message #225

The House of Bishops informs the House of Deputies that on Jul 9, 2022 it considered resolution A214 (The Reverend Canon Dr. Harold Lewis). The house acted to:

Adopt - HB Only

Resolved, that the House of Bishops, meeting at this 80th General Convention of The Episcopal Church, gathered in Baltimore, Maryland, gives thanks to Almighty God for the life, ministry, teaching, preaching, and witness of the Reverend Canon Dr. Harold Lewis, who died on 31 December 2021, and who, with a steady beat, full of faith and hope, never stumbled along the stony path in his vocation to teach us and to challenge us with the truth of the weary years and the silent tears of the experience of our Black and brown sisters and brothers in The Episcopal Church; and be it further

Resolved, the House of Bishops notes the enduring significance of his scholarship in the field of the history of the Black Church; and be it further

Resolved, the House of Bishops mourns the loss to the Church of his unique voice in both pulpit and podium as he expanded our sympathies and broadened our horizons, and yet kept our eyes on the prize, lest our feet should stray and our hearts forget; and be it further

Resolved, the House of Bishops extends to his widow, Claudette, and their family the assurance of our condolences and prayers.
